WhatsApp

Link your WhatsApp number with a code, how the 24-hour reply window works, and how to stop messages.

How-to guide · Last updated 27 October 2026

On this page
  1. Sign in to Eric. On Where should Eric talk to you? choose Continue with WhatsApp (later: Connections → Connect your communication channel → WhatsApp).
  2. Type your mobile number with its country code, for example +44 7700 900000.
  3. Click Send me a code on WhatsApp.
  4. Eric messages you a six-digit code on WhatsApp. Type it into Eric and click That's me.

The code works for 10 minutes. If it expires, send yourself a new one. Each person links their own number; numbers belong to people on your business, not to the business.

You seeWhat to do
"That number doesn't look right — include your country code."Start the number with + and the country code.
"That code doesn't match."Check the latest message from Eric and type the six digits again.
"That code has expired."Send yourself a new code.
"I've sent that number a few codes already."Wait an hour, or use Slack instead.

The 24-hour window

WhatsApp only lets a business write freely to you for 24 hours after your last message. So:

  • For 24 hours after you message Eric, he can send anything: findings, previews, buttons and answers.
  • After that, he can only send short notices, such as an alert, a test result, a connection that needs reconnecting, or your daily figures. Each tells you what to reply.
  • Messages with buttons wait. Anything that needs the full chat is held, and sent as soon as you next write to Eric. A notice tells you when updates are waiting for your reply.
Tip: If you haven't heard from Eric for a while, send him any message, such as today. That opens the window and he sends what is waiting.

Replies Eric understands in notices

ReplyWhat happens
CHECKOn an alert: Eric looks into it.
OKOn an alert: you've seen it, nothing more happens.
UNDOOn a test result: Eric puts the page back as it was.
STOPStops the messages Eric sends on his own.
STARTTurns them back on.

A number linked by mistake

When a number is linked, Eric sends it a message: "Your WhatsApp number was linked to the Eric account for … If this was not you, reply NO and the link is removed."

  • If you reply NO (or not me, or wrong number) within 7 days, and it's your first reply, the number is unlinked straight away. Eric replies: "Done. This number is no longer linked to …'s Eric account, and Eric won't message it again."
  • If you've already chatted with Eric since, he asks you once to confirm: reply NO again within 10 minutes.
  • Nothing that was waiting to be sent goes to the number.
  • The business's owner is told by email, and in Slack or Teams if they use it.

"No thanks" doesn't unlink a number: it means not now.

Stop messages

Send STOP (or STOPALL or UNSUBSCRIBE) as the whole message. Eric replies: "You're unsubscribed — I won't message you unless you reply START. Your account stays exactly as it is."

After STOP, Eric still answers when you write to him. Send START (or UNSTOP or RESUME) to get his updates back. Words like "cancel" or "end" don't unsubscribe you.

Buttons on WhatsApp

WhatsApp shows up to three reply buttons. Pressing one is the same as typing its words. If an option has no button, such as Start cautiously at 10%, type it: start cautiously.

Limits

Eric answers up to 20 messages an hour from one number. If you reach that, he tells you how long to wait. Your dashboard has the same numbers in the meantime.

Important: To unlink your number, open Connections → Connect your communication channel, click Disconnect next to WhatsApp and confirm. Removing someone from your business also unlinks their number.
